It’s true. Just having a smart phone face down on the desk in front of you as you take an IQ test causes you to score significantly lower. The average smart phone user spends 145 minutes touching their phone 2,617 times a day.

If someone said, I’ll pay you $90 a month to spend 2.5 hours a day doing whatever you want to do (so long as it’s not with a smart phone), would you do it?
I would.
In fact, I have.
I got rid of my smart phone and replaced it with dumb and cheap flip phone.
You can too.
You’re goin all Amish on us!

It’s true. I pride myself on being part of the diger-amish.

Oops, I was logged into Beth’s blog when I commented earlier–so I’m the true culprit. But I am considering following your advice when I next need a phone. Cost is a growing factor, but it is the source of meaningless distraction way too often. I like digeramish.

The real Amish are trading in their flip phones for smart phones. I have seen adult Amish men with smart phones, for “work” purposes of course.

That’s also true. It’s going to be very interesting to see how Amish culture evolves once their dopamine reward system is hijacked by the App pushers. Based on what I’ve seen of ex-Amish on Facebook, it doesn’t look good.

The international backpackers I was with last night on the volcano were discussing this last night. Travel today is unthinkable with a flip phone.

See? Backpackers used to be some of the most independent, resilient people I know. Now thanks to the maps apps on their smart phones they’re just so much diger-cattle following the lowing herd. To paraphrase the musical “Chess,” one town looks very like another with your head down over your smart phone, brother.
